Into The Thick of It. . .
The jungle's kind of tricky, the path is never straight
And sometimes there's no path at all, which makes it hard to navigate
Although the jungle's thick, we're moving through it quick
But that won't do us any good if we're going around in circles
Mary J. Blige would say this a little differently than the Backyardigans, She'd say
"Love ain't just black and white
Ain't that simple
It gets hard to tell whose wrong or right
When Its dark with us
I swear I barely see the light
Should I stick it out?
Are you worth this fight?
Are we worth this fight?
Cuz I ain't no quitter babe
And I be damned if all these years I let you diss me babe
I was there when no one wanted to stay with you baby
You know I deserve more than this
I watched her documentary this weekend in my spare time. It touched me to see a woman who lived her pain out loud. She didn't try to cower from it, she embraced it all and turned it into beautiful works of art for herself ! She wasn't thinking of us, but she was setting herself FREE. We are just a byproduct of her breaking the chains that tried to bind her. After watching the documentary I began to look at titles of her albums:
What's the 411
Share My World
No More Drama
Love and Life
Stronger With Each Tear
My Life II The Journey
Strength of a Woman
The album titles forced me to take a look at ways I was inspired by Mary J, and in which way different generations interpret pain, loss, and confusion hence the backyadrigans quote above. A few of Mary moments that come to mind when I began to look at her album titles. First a friend of mind was going through a divorce and I knew she loved Mary J. so I took her on a late night ride, and I played Indestructible during the drive, and she practically melted into the seat. I will NEVER forget that moment. I can still hear her cry.
Then through my own divorce, my step dad loves ole' skool music heavy like Uncle Charlie Wilson . . . Well one day I was living with them and I was in the room just staring at the ceiling. He turned on Mary J. Indestructible and U+Me (love lesson) and I was in a puddle on the floor. I don't know if he did that on purpose or what but it felt God ordained. In life when we don't know how or what to pray trust and know that the spirit got YOU !
"Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good." Romans 8:26-27 MSG
